Abstract
Derelict coking plants or gas works contribute to the main non-degradable wastes in all industrial countries. Typical contaminations of such places are phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), cyanides, thiocyanates and ammonia. Because of their preponderance and their wide-ranging toxic effects, these sites are a considerable challenge in the decontamination of non-degradable wastes.
