Abstract
One of the mechanisms that may contribute considerably to the heating of the solar and stellar coronae is resonant absorption of Alfvén waves. In this paper we discuss the incorporation of the photospheric boundary conditions in the theory of resonant heating of coronal loops. It is shown that the Alfvén continuum of coronal loops which are line-tied to the photosphere has entirely different properties than the conventional one. This new line-tied Alfvén continuum is found to be responsible for resonant heating of coronal loops which are bounded by the photosphere and excited at their foot points by photospheric motion.
