Abstract

Over recent years several studies have been made on the effect that a degree of three-dimensionality can have on the evolution of centrifugal instabilities. It has been demonstrated that a small cross-flow will stabilise the Taylor and Görtler modes, at least in high Taylor/Görtler number situations. The equations governing longitudinal vortices in the Görtler case are given, and are solved numerically, exploiting their parabolic nature. The dominant effect is to induce a periodicity in the streamwise coordinate, and the most unstable Görtler mode is no longer necessarily steady. It will be shown that crossflow modifies the interval over which a vortex grows.
