Diamagnetic Susceptibilities and Electronic Delocalization

Localization and Delocalization in Quantum Chemistry

Part of the book series: Localization and Delocalization in Quantum Chemistry ((LDQC,volume 1))

Abstract

Experimental and theoretical results on the diamagnetic susceptibilities of hydrocarbons are analyzed and are correlated to electronic derealization.

In spite of the additivity rule, the interaction effects between non-bonded atoms give an important paramagnetic contribution to the saturated hydrocarbon susceptibilities.

In the case of unsaturated hydrocarbons, diamagnetism is a sensitive test for electronic derealization. However, the magnetic anisotropy in these molecules are due not only to this derealization, but also to localized contribution of sp 2-hybridized atoms.
