Abstract

In organ transplantation, e.g. orthothopic liver transplantation, the graft acceptance and long-term graft survival depend on many factors, most of them being only partially revealed. Next to technical-surgical factors, host factors play an important role. These include pretransplant immunocompetence (determined by genetic background, nature of liver disease and state of health), the post-transplant immunosuppression induced by immunosuppressive therapy and complicating bacterial, fungal and viral infections.
