Abstract

Low temperature diffusion of atomic hydrogen on metal surfaces is discussed in terms of a band model, applicable to diffusion of many interacting particles obeying quantum statistics. The coverage dependence of diffusion of H, D and T on W(110) is found to be consistent with collision limited band propagation at low coverages, within very narrow bands. At higher concentrations the hydrogen-hydrogen interactions affect both energetics and dynamics of the adsorbed atoms and the coverage dependent diffusion only be qualitatively analyzed in terms of an effective band picture. The usefulness and limitations of a band treatment for heavy particle diffusion are discussed in the light of these results.
