Abstract
Several proposals to construct artificial photoresponsive polymer systems have been reviewed. Photoisomerizable chromophores are incorporated into the polymer systems and used to actuate the polymers to control their properties. Cis-trans isomerization of unsaturated linkages in the polymer backbone, for example, directly reflects a conformational change. A change in the intramolecular interactions due to generation of charges or strong dipoles in the polymer chain also induces the conformational change. Using a laser flash photolysis combined with a light scattering detection method, the dynamics of the conformational change of the polymers has been followed in the microsecond range. Applications of the systems to photostimulated shape changes of polymer gels and sol-gel transitions are described.
