Abstract

A review is made of the nature of sewage sludge, and of the advantages and disadvantages of disposing of it to land, by incineration, and to sea. The major factors which influence the impact of sludge disposal, and the effects of sludge disposal on the marine environment are considered. Balancing the economic costs of the various methods of sludge disposal and their environmental effects are discussed.
