Samenvatting
Halitose is een frequent voorkomend probleem, waarvan de oorzaak meestal in de mondholte te vinden is. Omdat de mens zijn eigen ademgeur niet goed kan vaststellen, is het aan te raden om tijdens een tandartsbezoek de ademgeur van patiënten te controleren. De belangrijkste oorzaken van intraorale halitose zijn tongbeslag, gingivitis en parodontitis. Bacteriën in het tongbeslag en de tandplaque produceren vluchtige zwavelverbindingen, die bij intraorale halitose hoofdzakelijk verantwoordelijk zijn voor de ademgeur. Hierdoor richt de behandeling van halitose zich voornamelijk op het verwijderen van het tongbeslag en de supra- en subgingivale plaque.
