Abstract
In dit hoofdstuk komt de relatie tussen parodontitis en hart- en vaatziekten aan de orde. Neem een 54-jarige patiënt met onbehandelde, gegeneraliseerd ernstige parodontitis in gedachten. De vraag is of deze chronische aandoening, hoogstwaarschijnlijk reeds jaren aanwezig, systemische effecten heeft en een risico vormt voor de conditie van hart en bloedvaten. Hart- en vaatziekten zijn een breed begrip; de meest voorkomende hart- en vaatziekten berusten op atherosclerose. Atherosclerose kan vervolgens leiden tot de meest bekende en meest voorkomende complicaties, een myocard infarct (MI) of een herseninfarct (beroerte). Deze twee cardiovasculaire aandoeningen zijn bestudeerd in relatie tot parodontitis.
