Oncogene Expression in High-Grade Astrocytomas: A Comparative Study of Immunogold-Silver and Peroxidase-Antiperoxidase Immunohistochemistry

  • Chapter
Biological Aspects of Brain Tumors

Abstract

The expression products of many oncogenes is known to mediate cell proliferation [1–3], and much interest has been focused upon oncogene expression as a marker for neoplastic phenotypes [4]. Additionally, the level of expression of certain oncogenes in some tumors has been a significant indicator of biological behavior [5]. In this study, we examined the relative efficacy of immunogold silver (IGS) and peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) immunohistochemistry in detecting the expression product of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R), c-myc, ras, and c-fos in 20 high-grade astrocytomas.
