Abstract
In elderly patients with reduced bone quality, insufficiency fractures of the os sacrum are relatively common and typically associated with severe disabling pain. To date, conservative therapy is considered the standard, with strict bed rest and pain medication as well as pain-adapted exercise measures individually adapted. However, patients with severe disabling pain mobilize poorly, develop a high rate of complications, and an unacceptable mortality rate. These patients benefit significantly from cement augmentation using an interventional, minimally invasive treatment option. In the following, CT-guided balloon sacroplasty, radiofrequency sacroplasty, vertebro-sacroplasty and cement sacroplasty for non-displaced insufficiency fractures are explained and discussed in comparison of methods with regard to clinical improvement, cost-effectiveness and possible complications with the latest literature.
