Abstract
Translucent granular aerogel is more easily produced than aerogel tiles. An evacuated layer of aerogel pellets between glass panes is considered as excellent superinsulating system for passive solar energy usage. For a 20 mm layer the thermal loss coefficient at ambient temperatures is in the order of k ≈ 0.5 W/(m2 ·K) and thus extremely low compared to conventional translucent thermal insulations. Aerogel could be employed in modified house or Trombe wall systems, for direct gain applications in greenhouses, indoor swimming-pools etc., or for long-term storage of solar energy in saltless solar ponds.
