Abstract

This paper presents a method based on the concept of temperature-independent spectral indices (TISI) to retrieve both the spectral emissivities and land surface temperature from AVHRR data. First, the bi-directional reflectivity (BDR) in channel 3 of AVHRR (3.7µm) is determined by extracting the solar reflection occuring in this channel during the day thanks to an elimination of the emitted radiation by a particular intercomparision between day and night TISI. Then, assuming that the angular dependence of this BDR is known, the emissivity in channel 3 can be derived, leading to a straightforward determination of the emissivities in channels 4 and 5 using the corresponding TISI. Kowning the emissivities in channels 4 and 5, the land surface temperature (LST) is deduced by the local split-window method. The sensibility of this method to atmospheric uncertainties is discussed. First results obtained from AVHRR data over Oran area in Northwestern Algeria are presented.
