OAK Knee Evaluation: A New Way to Assess Knee Ligament Injuries

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the past, attempts were made to facilitate the understanding of knee instabilities using a system of clinical examination and a description of classifications. Different emphasis was put on the relation of the detected abnormal femorotibial motion and the corresponding structural damage. Hughston et al. (1976) worked on a classification system in which the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) was the rotational center of the knee. If the PCL was ruptured, straight instability had occurred; if the PCL was intact, rotational instability had occurred. In working with this system over the past 10 years, the authors have learned that not every case can be attributed arbitrarily to one of the three groups.
