Summary

Routine samples of water and plankton were taken at 5 stations on fast-ice near Syowa Station (69° 00′ S, 39° 35′ E) in the eastern part of Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica. Sampling was carried out at 2–3 week intervals during 13 months between January 1982 and January 1983, excluding February 1982. Temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate-P, silicate-Si, nitrite-N, nitrate-N, ammonium-N and chlorophyll-a, from just below the ice to near the bottom, were measured. Oceanographic conditions changed seasonally; the range of physical variables corresponding to that of the Antarctic Surface Water. Maximum chlorophyll-a concentration (11.30 μg 1−1) was observed at 5 m in late January of 1983. Integrated chlorophyll-a stock beneath the ice was much higher than has been reported from northern Antarctic open waters. Copepods, chaetognaths, ostracods, and euphausiids occurred throughout the year, and copepods were a major component of the zooplankton community. Paralabidocera antarctica, an Antarctic endemic copepod, formed a dense population just beneath the ice only in December and January. A preliminary account of this study is discussed.
