Abstract
Ectodermal dysplasias (ED) are inborn disorders of ectodermal differentiation products. They are commonly divided into hidrotic (HED) and anhidrotic (AED) ED. Freire-Maia (1971) proposed to classify ED syndromes according to the structures involved: hair dysplasia, nail dysplasia, abnormal dentition and hypoplasia of sweat (and minor salivary) glands, and listed 32 ED syndromes. Witkop et al. (1975) put together 40 different syndromes, many of which affect more than ectodermal structures alone. Though ED are not uncommon and hair alterations are well known from clinical experience, light and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) hair investigations are rare (Brown 1971, Altmeier and Schindera 1975, Aoyagi and Porter 1976).
