Some Early Paleogene Species from Western Kamchatka

  • Conference paper
Cenozoic Plants and Climates of the Arctic

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASII,volume 27))

Abstract

Leaf fossils from the Palaeocene-Eocene boundary sediments in Kamchatka, exposed in sections by the Snatol river, add to information from other fossils such as palynomorphs and molluscs. The plant megafossils described here together with their associated fauna and sedimentary evidence suggest that the deposits were formed on a coastal plain which was occasionally flooded by a shallow sea. New species, based on leaf material, are described as Magnolia basicordata, Vitis microdentata and Alnites schimanskii.
