Costing Hospital Case-Mix: The European Experience

Abstract

Historically, the funding and financing of health care systems in Western Europe have developed within welfare state and/or social insurance type models. While countries differ in the precise approach developed, financing for hospital services, in particular, has traditionally been undertaken by governments (regional or national) and/or insurance funds (OECD 1987).
