Abstract
Riboflavin (III, Fig. 1) was discovered 50 years ago by Kuhn and coworkers (1) as an essential vitamin; it is today produced in large quantities industrially, both by chemical synthesis and by fermentation, and is widely used as a food additive and as part of most vitamin supplements. Considering these facts it is surprising that the biosynthetic origin of almost half of the carbon atoms in the molecule is very poorly understood.
