Abstract
Dramatic changes in oestrous responsiveness during the female reproductive cycle are correlated with the action of gonadal hormones on the central nervous system. The mechanism of action of these hormones is largely unknown although great strides have been made toward an understanding of how steroid hormones act on brain tissue. As a first step in illuminating the particular events underlying the hormonal mediation of behaviour, it is necessary to identify the specific population of cells in the nervous system upon which hormones act to increase the probability of specific behavioural changes.
