Abstract

Optimum filters were introduced into geophysics in the mid-sixties, especially to solve seismic problems related to oil and gas exploration. They were introduced for two reasons:

  • to improve the resolution of seismograms so that thin layers, small structures, faults, and wedgeouts and pinchouts could be recognized better. This is done by transforming the sequence of recorded signals to short, broadband signals.

  • to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic records.
