Abstract
Currently a great deal of effort is being expended on ways of increasing the dose to the target volume in external beam radiotherapy as it is generally accepted that this will lead to increased local control and, in certain cases, to higher cure rates for certain tumours (Suit and Westgate 1986). Conformal therapy (CFRT) is seen as the way to achieve this (Tait and Nahum 1990), through the optimization of photon and electron beam arrangements (Brahme 1988; Webb 1989), the development of accelerator technology (Brahme 1987; Boesecke et al. 1988) or through exploiting the superior depth-dose characteristics of proton beams (Slater et al. 1988).
