Definition

The weighted scores technique identifies distinct (usually four) categories (0 = injected paw is not favored, 1 = injected paw has little or no weight on it, 2 = injected paw is elevated and not in contact with any surface, 3 = injected paw is licked, bitten, or shaken). A weighted pain score (which ranges from 0 to 3) is calculated by multiplying the time spent in each category by the category weight, summing these products and dividing by the total time in a given time interval.
