Definition

Geniculate neuralgia is a rare, severe chronic pain condition in which stabbing or electric shock-like pain paroxysms, sometimes accompanied by ongoing burning pain, are felt in the distribution of the sensory component of the facial (seventh cranial) nerve (the outer ear, ear canal, mastoid, or infrequently in the region of the eye). It is similar to the other cranial nerve neuralgias, trigeminal neuralgia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Pain attacks may occur spontaneously, or be triggered by sensory stimuli or by swallowing.
