Zusammenfassung
Die Organisation des Gehirns und besonders seine Funktion lassen sich nicht allein aus der Kenntnis seiner zellulären Komponenten und deren Wechselwirkungen erklären. Für ein tieferes und weiterführendes Verständnis seiner Funktionen bedarf es neuer, nichtinvasiver Ansätze, die ergänzend zu elektrophysiologischen Methoden (z. B. In-vivo-Elektrophysiologie, EEG) oder Mikrodialyse eine wiederholte Untersuchung des intakten, lebenden Gehirns auch über einen längeren Zeitraum ermöglichen. Dieses Ziel verfolgen räumlich auflösende und bildgebende Verfahren wie CT (Computertomographie), SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography, Einzelphotonenemissionstomographie), PET (Positronenemissionstomographie) und MRT (Magnetresonanztomographie) (Übersicht bei Sandhu et al. 2010).
