In den letzten 20 Jahren ist die Anzehl der Studien zu Risikofaktoren rapide angestiegen. Dabei wurde der Begriff „Risikofaktor“ inflationär und inkonsistent genutzt, was nicht zuletzt auf das Fehlen eindeutiger Definitionen zurückzuführen ist. Vorschläge für klarere Definitionen wurden in den zurückliegenden Jahren von H. Kraemer und Mitarbeitern erstellt und sind mittlerweile allgemein anerkannt. Da die entsprechende, Defi nition für den Begriff Risikofaktor auch diesem Kapitel zugrunde liegt, soll zunächst der Begriffeingeführt werden.
