Abstract

The ability of photothermal measurements to provide calorimetric data on active, functioning photovoltaic solar cells is described. We illustrate how the voltage dependence of such data can yield quantitative information on the relative contributions of the different energy conversion loss mechanisms, that are operative in a solar cell, by way of analysis of a number of experimental results on a variety of solar cells, including liquid junction ones. Central to our analysis is the use of a rather simple geometrical construction based on a plot of the photothermal signal versus the applied bias voltage.
