Zusammenfassung

Die demographische Entwicklung nahm in vielen westeuropäischen Ländern einen überraschend ähnlichen Verlauf, der häufig anhand der Konzepte des ersten und zweiten demographischen Übergangs (auch erste und zweite demographische Transition) erklärt wird. Der Ausgangspunkt des ersten demographischen Übergangs ist eine Bevölkerung mit hoher Geburtenrate (Fertilität) und hoher Sterblichkeit (Mortalität), woraus sich eine stagnierende bzw. nur langsam wachsende Bevölkerung ergibt. Durch medizinischen Fortschritt (z. B. Impfungen, Antibiotika), bessere Ernährung und verbesserte hygienische Bedingungen (z. B. fachgerechte Entsorgung von Müll und Abwasser) nimmt die Sterblichkeit ab, die Lebenserwartung steigt damit.
