Abstract
Lee surveys a critical period in dress reform in Korea, from the 1880s to the 1900s. As she illuminates, with the painful process of government-initiated dress reform imposed on high-ranked civil and military officers, dress reform was most visible among the social elite. The diplomatic needs of those traveling abroad as delegates of Korea were powerful reasons for government-initiated reforms. The way formal attire for the court and the government was created resulted from a communal discussion in government. This is a remarkable aspect of Lee’s painstaking research of the daeryebok (The Great Court Attire). Lee’s most important contribution is the process in which each group of the social elite competed and compromised to transform themselves as modern citizens in a rapid flow of sociopolitical changes caused by domestic or international forces. Lee’s discussion of Western dress mainly concerns men in public space in urban centers.
