Definitions
There is ambiguity, hesitancy, and concern about how to “properly” define sexual violence (Logan et al. 2016). Legal definitions of rape change from country to country, some including penile penetration, some being less limiting, and others being confined to certain contexts and environments, such as war, or intimate partner violence (Obote-Odora 2005, WHO). This chapter looks specifically at sexual violence against women and girls in literature to inform policy solutions in a gender sensitive way. Mostly, sexual violence is defined by a victim’s lack of consent, or ability to consent (Bumiller 1987; McPhail 2016). The term “Sexual Violence (SV)” will be referred to as per the CDC’s definition: “any sexual activity where consent is not obtained or freely given.” This definition has been chosen because it will be deliberately challenged to present the...
