Abstract
In diabetic cardiomyopathy, structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium are secondary to diabetes and are not directly attributed to other confounding factors or comorbidities often associated with diabetes. An estimated 300 million patients will have diabetes mellitus by 2025, and cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Diastolic dysfunction often precedes systolic dysfunction.
