Abstract

A stone deterioration study was carried out in national monuments of artistic, historical and environmental value in northern Portugal built with the regional rock, the granite. It is aimed to develop an educational resource intended as an integral part of formal school science curricula in order to raise the students awareness about the importance of the local geology in the built heritage, as well as the interaction of the intrinsic properties of the natural stone and the environmental factors that enhance its deterioration. An educational resource is proposed for basic and secondary level, that can also be adapted for the public in general, involving interpretative processes based on the relationships between local geology and Cultural Heritage, displaying several multidisciplinary activities.
