Abstract
Clouds are considered as the major atmospheric factor that affects the surface solar irradiance (SSI) due to its high spatial temporal and spatial variability, the different types and, consequently, the changes in optical depth. As a result, events ranging from almost total reduction to substantial enhancements of SSI under particular cloud conditions can occur. In this study, the variability of SSI due clouds, with special emphasis on enhancement events, is examined. A digital imaging system, measurements and model calculations are used and the effect of different cloud types (thick or thin) on SSI is examined.
