Abstract
This chapter describes the main motivation for writing this book, as well as its object and structure. Drawing on the absence of urban morphology manuals, a textbook on the study of the physical form of cities is proposed. The book is structured in seven different parts: the elements of urban form, the agents and processes of transformation, cities in history, three contemporary cities, the study of urban form - different approaches, from theory to practice and, finally, the relationships with other fields of knowledge.
