Abstract

Encephalocele is simply defined as extracranial herniation of cerebral tissue through a defect in the cranium and the dura. They are the 3rd most common craniospinal dysraphism after anencephaly and spina bifida (Zaganjor et al. 2016). The spectrum of cranial dysraphism ranges from Anencephaly to Crania Bifida occulta. Anencephaly represents the complete failure of the cranial vault formation, malformed skull base with absence of most of brain tissue (Naidich et al. 1992). In Crania bifida occulta, the cranial vault fails to close completely (usually in the midline) but with no extracranial protrusion of cerebral tissue (Naidich et al. 1992). Encephalocele falls between the two pathologies in the spectrum of cranial dysraphism.
