Definition

The odontoameloblastoma is an exceedingly rare mixed odontogenic neoplasm. It is comprised of both ameloblastomatous and odontoma-like elements. In the past, this tumor also has been referred to as an ameloblastic odontoma or a soft odontoma; however, these terms should be avoided because of potential confusion with the ameloblastic fibro-odontoma or a developing odontoma. The term odontoameloblastoma seems most appropriate, because the lesion exhibits the same biologic potential as the ameloblastoma.

Some investigators have proposed that the lesion may represent a collision tumor, although this theory appears unlikely because of the close intermingling of ameloblastoma and odontoma elements. Others have proposed that the proliferating epithelium within an ameloblastoma may induce the mesenchymal tissue to produce a hamartomatous proliferation of dental tissues.
