Ekonomiya – an outside harbor in Arkhangelsk built during the First World War in 1915–1916 to enable the extension of the winter navigation period. E. is situated 25 km away from downtown Arkhangelsk. E. underwent refurbishment during 1972–1980 with new concrete berths, a loading facility with storage spaces, and rail tracks built. There are seven active berths with the total length of 1162 m at E. The port can receive ships with the draft of 9.5 m. There are outdoor and indoor storage facilities. The Northern Russia’s only modern container terminal was built in 1980.
