Abstract

The comparison between a widely used Monte Carlo simulation method with a newly developed stochastic method, the Geant4/Gamos tissue optics is performed for simulating photon transport in an application of glucose sensing. The past studies show the optical properties would change with the changes of the glucose concentration. Parameter values of thickness of the tissue phantom and optical properties are taken from the previous reported MCML method at 800nm and 960nm with the glucose concentration in the range of 0 to 30mM. The results of total reflectance (R d ) and total transmittance (T d ) exhibit a good agreement between the Geant4/Gamos and the MCML. The sensitivity of the Geant4/Gamos was higher than that of the MCML in all measurements. At 800nm, the difference of the sensitivity between the Geant4/Gamos and the MCML were 0.024 percent/mM (transmittance) and 0.014 percent/mM (reflectance). Meanwhile, at 960nm, the difference of the sensitivity between the Geant4/Gamos with the MCML was 0.004 percent/mM in both transmittance and reflectance.
