Role of Neotectonic Activity in Triggering Landslide in Dehradun Valley, Garhwal Himalaya, India

Abstract

The study area belongs to sub and lesser Himalayan belt of north India. Dehradun valley covers Siwaliks and Krol-Tal belt in Garhwal Himalaya. It attains its largest extension in sub Himalaya and the area is represented by rugged topography and is marked by certain important landslides along Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). Uplifted nature of Doon valley has resulted in emergence and controlling the development of landslides. It is established that Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and cross faults in the Doon valley are neotectonically active. The area is marked by the presence of scouring, displacement features of fans and terraces, abrupt change in stream courses, tilting of terraces, overriding of Doon gravels and boulders over Siwaliks. Major rise in elevation and break in slope along the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and field studies reveal that landslides in this region are controlled by stage of rejuvenation. It reveals that the area is subjected to neotectonic movements.
