Abstract
Numerous studies have assessed PTSD in coronary artery disease, but only a few have explored PTSD as a response to structural heart disease. Structural heart disease is an emerging field within cardiovascular medicine that refers to abnormality of the heart muscle or heart valves which is divided into two main groups: (1) valvular heart disease and (2) congenital (inborn) heart disease. The current chapter presents the few reports on PTSD as a response to structural heart disease, suggesting that PTSD could be prevalent among patients with structural heart disease and among parents of children with congenital heart disease. This chapter also reviews the reported relationships between PTSD and other manifestations of structural heart disease and discusses important clinical implications of these findings.
