Abstract

McKenna and Kallio [1] ended their review on the biology of hydrocarbons with a statement which was to prove extremely relevant during the following years: The next review of the subject will have at its disposal the basic data necessary to concern itself not with pathways but rather with a penetrating analysis of mechanism at the molecular and enzymatic level. The relevance of this citation is evident to anybody who has studied the literature of the last seven years.
