Abstract

This chapter offers an overview of the theoretical foundations of the book, making a point about the importance of language in shaping organisational processes and outcomes. The authors challenge the view that considers communication to be a mere “technical skill”; rather, they argue that language should be considered as a dynamic and context-bound social practice. The chapter sets the scene by presenting the case study method and the case of the “fundraising team” as the focus of the research. Through a detailed introduction of the organisational context and the team, the chapter provides rich insights for the data sections that are analysed later in the book. Describing the context of the consultancy and research, this chapter touches upon the questions around the role of the researcher and the tensions that exist between academic scholarship and problem-oriented research.
