Quality of life (QOL) is influenced by aspects such as health, family, friends, community conditions, and opportunities for employment, income, housing, as well as access to adequate public services. Perceptions of safety can also have a strong influence on quality of life.

Background

The March 12, 2008 edition of Maclean’s, a Canadian national news magazine, featured a full-length report titled, “The Most Dangerous Cities in Canada.” It presented 2006 data for 100 cities according to several types of crime including murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, break and enter, and auto theft. The report also included commentary on the causes of high crime in certain cities, social upgrading initiatives, and crime prevention strategies. According to Maclean’s (2008), the majority of high-crime cities are found in western Canada.
