Women’s Football in Latin America

Abstract

The participation of women in world football refereeing was inaugurated by Léa Campos, a Brazilian whose actions crossed borders and challenged the military dictatorship imposed in the country (1964–1985) and the government decree that prohibited women from playing football (1941–1979). Such barriers hindered the development of the sport when practiced by women and the results still endure in Brazilian culture, since women continue to struggle to make themselves visible and respected in this sport. Thus, we aim to analyze the trajectory of Brazilian female futsal referees, taking into account their inclusion and difficulties in their careers, personal plans in the refereeing, and suggestions to expand the inclusion of women in this professional field. This qualitative research included the participation of five Brazilian futsal referees, who answered a semi-structured interview, conducted via WhatsApp, recorded on a digital device and then transcribed literally. The material was submitted to content analysis. The results show that women came to refereeing from different connections with the sport, mentioning the paternal influence, the financial perspectives of professionalization, the maintenance of involvement with the sport, and the close relationship with other female referees. Despite the prejudice and the small number of opportunities found along the way, the interviewees feel professionally fulfilled and aim to expand the representation of women in leadership positions in this sport.
