Abstract
Gender-based violence is prevalent in all cultures, countries and societies. It affects millions of individuals around the world, but women seem to experience the worst of it in terms of prevalence, severity and impact. This chapter aims to provide an overview of gender-based violence as a backdrop to the book. It aims to introduce the concept of gender, gender-based violence, explore how gender-based violence is defined, identify various types of gender-based violence and introduce terminology used in the upcoming chapters of the book.
