Abstract

USE can be employed for various purposes, such as drawing up programs of demands for new designs or renovation projects, doing post-occupancy evaluations, screening preliminary designs for design reviews, describing processes of use in groups and buildings, and benchmarking buildings. In the previous chapter, the methodology of USE was outlined. This chapter illustrates the practical application of the method. In addition, adaptations are discussed that may be required for a good result. On the one hand, the method has certain anchors that provide clarity and reliability, such as the conceptual framework and the protocol, while on the other hand, it should be flexible in order to be able to respond to the circumstances in a project. The examples show the kind of choices that sometimes must be made and options that are available.

Notes

  1. 1.

In the examples of needs and demands in Sect. 5.1 and Sect. 5.2, a number of imperfections have been intentionally included for illustration purposes that obviously do not occur in the real program.

  2. 2.

The method was used in several graduation projects on a variety of topics such as the renovation of rental housing for elderly people, nursing homes, portfolio management of municipal buildings, military offices, the housing of young adults with intellectual disabilities and the design review of a future Olympic village (see part 3 of Appendix A for a list containing some of these graduation projects including the study mentioned here).
