Abstract
The chapter’s objective is to recover the debate on the use of VAR in Brazilian football with a focus on the opinions published in the national sports press until 2019, which was marked by dichotomous analyses. At first, the initial opinions of journalists, players, managers, referees, and club presidents about this technological innovation are presented. Then, the problems caused by the misuse of VAR during this introductory period are highlighted. In addition, the positive effects of the imposed change and its irreversibility are discussed, and the idea of fair play is examined. In the final remarks, it is suggested that VAR has become an additional element in the matrix of structural inequalities that unbalance the world of football in Brazil.
