Abstract

A collaborative study concerning the cathedral of Orleans in France is in progress. This study involves historical and archeological aspects as well as a global 3D survey. Yet, about 400 laser scanning stations were performed to progressively build the digital replica of the cathedral. After scanning registration, architectural plans (vertical and horizontal) of the gothic cathedral and its roman remains, including basement, were extracted.

First, from these architectural documents, a frame analysis was conducted to improve our knowledge of the construction of the cathedral. This frame analysis highlighted some changes in the architecture project during construction. It also gave us data about various technical aspects of construction like stonework implementation and distance units.

Secondly, the comparison between different horizontal cuts of the central nave pillars allowed us to measure the horizontal displacement of these structural elements. These measurements can help identifying singular behavior and document degraded elements, and can also serve as references for the monitoring of the displacements of the structural elements of the cathedral.
