Abstract

Leadership in nursing science in Iceland is and has been spearheaded by the urge to advance nursing practice. To reach that goal, four interrelated elements are essential: quality nursing education, autonomy of nurses, and a vision for a unique knowledge base on which to ground the nursing practice, all of which generates sufficient and skilled work force to meet continuously more complex demands for nursing care. These factors are portrayed in descriptions of the foundation of nursing science in Iceland that commenced with some imperative events taking place during the middle and late part of the twentieth century, particularly the establishment of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Iceland in the year 1973, along with some professional, societal and institutional events, actions, and circumstances that since have facilitated scientific endeavors in nursing.
